Last fall, I was HONORED to receive some products from Smart Baking Company to sample and review for you guys. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen my short reviews there. But if you’re new to my channels, welcome! And I hope you find this review to be helpful in making your choice to order some new keto breakfast options.

Who is Smart Baking Company?

From their website:

It started with an idea. We believed food could be healthy AND fun. It could be delicious AND nutritious. And it should be for EVERYONE.

One Dutch family in Central Florida set out to make this a reality.

As restauranteurs and fitness buffs, we knew how hard it could be for people to choose between their cravings and their goals — so we turned to science for the solution. We spent several years in our research and development kitchen seeking out the best ingredients, trying various combinations and perfecting processes until we cracked the code on healthy baking. From this extensive research, we developed our proprietary blend of oat fiber, corn fiber, rice fiber, and flax and our cutting-edge pharmaceutical process. Smart Baking Company™ was born.

Mission: Creating smarter and healthier products is our mission. We are dedicated to healthy and fun living. It is easy to talk about diets and changed lifestyles. It is hard to transition.

What are Smart Muf’ns?

In my opinion, Smart Muf’ns are the SBC spin on the typically calorie-heavy and carb-loaded Otis Spunkmeyer muffins I enjoyed growing up. They’re super light and airy and HUGE. These are great for on-the-go breakfast or snack options. Since we spent a fair amount of time traveling this past year, I immediately thought that these would be great for road trips or to take on a cruise! Keto cruise options that are sweet are few and hard to come by. These are also great keto breakfast options.

I’ve tried all 3 flavor options that are on their website. Here are my takes on each flavor.

Flavors:

  • Chocolate ChipThese give me flashbacks to when I was a kid and would have bread and butter with cinnamon sugar and chocolate chips on them. They’re definitely the dryest of the bunch, and mine had clusters of chocolate chips in them. These could be improved if the chips were more evenly spread out and by adding a little melted butter to the top.
  • Pumpkin Spice: The cream of the crop. These put every other pumpkin dessert I’ve ever eaten (keto or non-keto) to shame. These would be great to bring along to Thanksgiving celebrations so you can have some of your own pumpkin desserts while everyone else has their sugary pumpkin pie. Do not add anything to these.
  • Banana NutI would pair these with a latte, SF Vanilla almond chocolate milk, or hot black tea! They’re pretty good on taste. I don’t really get that fake banana flavor unless I really try to search for it. It really reminds me of those breakfast banana nut muffins.

Smart Cakes (another dessert from the same company) are notoriously light and fluffy. While these are also pretty light, they’re deceivingly filling. They’re each 0g net carbs and you won’t need anything else to go along with them to fill you up. They’re pretty low on calories, too!

These retail about $8.95 a box (3 mufns) and they’re worth every penny. They also sell a 3 box pack for ~$26. They do run special sales on these, though, and you can score them for lower prices on their website

RKF Product Score

Taste: 7/10
The deliciousness of the Pumpkin Spice Muf’ns is non-negotiable. I give those a 10. The others aren’t as outstanding, but they’re still good! Right after the Pumpkin Spice, I’d prefer the Banana Nut, and then after that, the Chocolate Chip.

Availability: 5/10
You can order these online and get them pretty quickly, but you’re going to be hard-pressed to find them in stores throughout the US. The catch here is that not everybody wants to order a product from online without seeing/sampling in-person first. I’m also not sure what their international shipping policy is. Since they’re located in Central Florida, they are pretty available in health food stores in that area. My mom lives near Gainesville, FL and has found them in several stores there. The closest store to me that stocks them is about an hour away. Seeing these in retail chains would a) make me incredibly happy and b) greatly improve the availability score.

Necessity: 6/10
Let’s face it, you’re going to need sweets at some point on keto. If you don’t want to fool with the caveats of keto baking (and the expense of getting those materials and wasting them on failed recipes), you’re much better off to just buy these. They’re always going to be good quality and baked well. Especially in the case of the Pumpkin Spice muffins, you’ll find a lot of occasions that you’ll want/need these in your life.

Cost: 7/10
These are really not bad on cost. I remember paying $2 per muffin at many breakfast places – these are a little over $2 each. No, they’re not a meal replacement, so the cost is a little high for a snack. But if you compare the cost of these to DIY keto baked goods, you’re not looking at anything too expensive. The cost could be worse, but it also could be better.

Quality: 8/10

My only issue with these is that each muffin contains so much fiber. There are 26g total carbs in each muf’n, which breaks down to 13g fiber and 13g erythritol. The base of these muffins is very fibrous, so you should be aware of that if you’re incorporating them into your diet. Make sure other food sources aren’t so high in fiber to complement these. The actual ingredients are pretty clean and are clearly listed.

Branding: 8/10

Individual packages and boxes of Smart Baking Company products are very cute, but I think that some of their creative work and product photos appear a little busy. I’m not totally sure what their branding colors are, because they use a lot of colorful imagery on their website. Their logo marks in the header include green/orange but some packs also use blue/red and their site has a lot of yellows/browns. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But I think it makes it a little harder to recognize them within display ads.

Bottom line: 7/10 Recommend
