Hey there! Welcome back for another keto product review. Today’s review has a special place in my heart because it’s for a company with big heart. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve been getting my act together when it comes to fitness and nutrition, and I’ve removed the crap from my diet that really caused me some problems in the first half of the year. Diet sodas have left the building, and so have other “dirty keto” ingredients, like maltitol, aspartame, here-and-there bites of sugary chocolate, and all of the keto snacks with crappy fillers and preservatives. It’s been really important to me, as of late, that I focus more on treating my body with extra love and care, and that involves feeding it good fuel.

Today’s review is for Chomps, which is a meat snack company focused on providing squeaky clean meat snack sticks to health-conscious consumers. I love it when a product is good, but I love it even more when it was created with the intention of being good. Does that make sense? It will when you read this over.

Anyways, I came across Chomps on Instagram a couple of months ago and I was really drinking the chomps kool-aid (figure of speech). Their Instagram is really cute and really colorful and their products are just aesthetic af. The ingredients looked clean and they seemed right in line with what I had planned. I reached out to offer a product review and they sent over a sample pack of all of their flavors. So before we get started, I just want to give Chomps a big thank you for this opportunity. As a reminder, even when I receive a product in exchange for a review, I am 100% unbiased in m opinions. All statements made here are a reflection of how I truly feel and what I would actually spend as a consumer and a health-focused, long term keto-dieter.

Who is Chomps?

From their website:

I won’t copy all of their info from their About Us page here, because you should visit the page and check it out, along with pictures of the founders and their families. In short, Chomps was founded to solve the problem of finding clean, healthy snacks that you can be proud to eat. Their website lists their accomplishments, which show they’re huge in the Whole 30, Paleo, Keto, and WW communities. And it’s no wonder because health-conscious people typically care a great deal about the ingredients in what they consume. Chomps aligns with that ideal perfectly. Also, the company is working to scale up operations to meet the great need for products like these. They’ve even got endorsements from Melissa Hartwig Urban, Co-Founder of Whole 30 and Thomas DeLauer (AKA the YouTube Keto Zaddy)

On the page that details their sourcing, Inside Chompsthe company states:

“Protecting the environment plays a big part in our sourcing decisions, too. Our farmers practice natural regenerative agriculture methods, like rotational grazing, which means they’re caring for the grass and the land first so both the animals and the environment benefit.”

Really great stuff! Their beef comes from Tasmania, their turkey comes from CA or MN, and their venison comes from New Zealand. Admittedly, sustainable sourcing is not something I’ve thought about before when it comes to products like this. It seems so obvious when you consider buying whole, raw meats, but it’s not as front-of-mind for me when it comes to these products. I like that they share this sourcing info on their website and it’s helped me to be a more educated consumer.

Products Reviewed

Initial thoughts on all of these are…

  • Wow, this packaging is even better in person.
  • This seems like a lot of snack for so few calories.
  • I can’t wait to try these.
  • I hope these don’t cost a billion dollars.

As far as their website goes, I really love its layout and navigation. Seems very fast and responsive and clean. My only wish is that there would be some super intimate close-ups of these flavors so you can see exactly what you’re getting, and not just a partially unwrapped product.

Before I break it down flavor-by-flavor, I do want to let you know that you can try all of these in a sampler pack here: TRIAL PACK

Original Beef

Per serving: 90 cal, 0g net carb, 6g fat, 9g protein

Thoughts: Just straight-up tasty. Everything I expect in a beef meat stick. Pretty filling and no weird aftertaste or greasy mouth-feel.

Jalapeno Beef

Per serving: 90 cal, 0.5g net carb, 6g fat, 9g protein

Thoughts: This one has that perfect peppery flavor without being very spicy. Definitely one of my top 3.

Italian Style Beef

Per serving: 90 cal, 0g net carb, 6g fat, 9g protein

Thoughts: This tastes so much like pizza. So, so much. Without the tomato part, of course, but it’s something about the basil that really just tells my brain, “this is actually pizza.” I thought this one was the most tender of all the flavors. Also in my top 3.

Sea Salt Beef

Per serving: 90 cal, 0g net carb, 6g fat, 9g protein

Thoughts: Y’all know I’m a salty bitch. I could always use more. This was good, I just didn’t find it to be much different from the original beef flavor. I need it to have something else in it. Could we trade this one for a chili-lime flavor? Or maybe… curry?

Cranberry Habanero Beef

Per serving: 100 cal, 4g net carb, 6g fat, 9g protein

Thoughts: Listen, I know what they were trying to do here, but it just didn’t work out for me. The flavor was okay but not really what I thought/hoped it would be. Also, the casing separated from the meat on this one so that was… odd. Sadly, this was a miss for me.

Original Turkey

Per serving: 60 cal, 0g net carb, 2.5g fat, 10g protein

Thoughts: If you’re going for a lower fat/high protein approach, you might prefer this one over the others. But I don’t. And it’s not necessarily the fault of Chomps; I really just don’t prefer turkey jerky of any kind. It has a toughness that I can’t get with. Flavor-wise, it was fine, but again, I’d rather have a beef stick. Macros are on point for a post-workout snack, though.

Jalapeno Turkey

Per serving: 60 cal, 0.5g net carb, 2.5g fat, 10g protein

Thoughts: Better than Original Turkey because it was a little more tender, but still not my first choice.

Salt & Pepper Venison

Per serving: 90 cal, 0g net carb, 6g fat, 9g protein

Thoughts: Venison is usually leaner than beef, and if you’ve never had it before, it has a richer flavor. Sometimes this comes across as… iron-like? I could taste a hint of that flavor in these, but the salt/pepper helped to curb it. I think it could use loads more pepper. Overall, I liked this one a lot. Top 3.

Some Bonus Things You Should Know About

Chomps has a robust blog full of helpful articles for keto, Whole 30, Paleo, and AIP dieters. While most of the articles are listicles, some of them answer questions of “is _____ keto friendly?” and that’s a huge bonus for certain web searchers. My favorite articles are below:

Another cool corner of the Chomps website is the Recipes page, which houses many more recipes using their beef sticks than you’d probably expect. I love the creativity here and I’ll definitely be giving these a try when I purchase more. Here are a few of my favorites:

Chomps has a pretty cool reward program that’s similar to the ones LifeAid Bev Co and Keto Bars run (certain actions = reward points, which are redeemable for discounts and special offers). If you’re a loyal Chomps customer, it’s worth signing up for these.

RKF Product Score

Taste: 7/10
These are mostly great. I took off a few points for my issues with cranberry habanero and the original turkey stick. This could be improved by addressing the casing issue on the cranberry flavor (maybe making it a little sweeter, too?) and figuring out how to make the turkey stick a little more tender.

Availability: 9/10
You can get these on their web shop, on Amazon, and at major grocery chains. Took off a point because we don’t have them within an hour radius, however, they do have a request form that I filled out for our area with our two major grocers.

Necessity: 10/10
On keto, you need clean foods first and foremost, and you need portable snacks that taste good. This checks all of those boxes for me.

Cost: 7/10
I think they’re a little pricey based on the number of calories you consume per stick. I’d like to see them closer to the $1.75/ea price point rather than $2-2.25. I do understand why they cost what they do since quality ingredients aren’t cheap. Your health is an investment. However, lowering the price just a bit would make them a more accessible snack for low-income individuals managing their health.

Quality: 10/10
Not a bad ingredient in any of these flavors. I stand by what’s in these and I’d pick them first any time.

Branding: 10/10
Minus one for the product photo thing I mentioned above, but other than that, all of their branding is top-notch. Easy to identify, clean, consistent… all of the marks of great branding.

Bottom line: 9/10 HIGHLY Recommend
